Re: db2udb with netbackup

Re: db2udb with netbackup

Sue,
You're backups will be pretty much the same. From the DB2 side it's pretty
straight forward. You just need to incorporate the NetBackup load
libraries into the backup by using the LOAD parm of the BACKUP command.
Example:
db2 -v backup db sample load /usr/openv/netbackup/bin/nbdb2.sl64'

There's more work to be done on with NetBackup. You'll need to work with
your NetBackup admin to get that working. Are you installing the NetBackup
Client on the DB2 server and then sending the backup to the NetBackup Media
Server? (This is OK for smaller databases, but for large databases you'll
want to implement a LAN-Free solution)
If you are, you'll need to set the NetBackup Server and Client parms.

NUMBER_DATA_BUFFERS, set to 128 and SIZE_DATA_BUFFERS set to 262,144
(256KB)
You'll also want to make sure that your NetBackup Media Server has enough
adapters to keep the tape drives busy.
DB2 can serve up data to the tape drives faster than they can write them,
so you want to make sure you're bottlenecked at the maximum write speed of
the tape. If you aren't then theirs some NetBackup or infrastructure
changes to be made. For example a LTO GEN 2 tape can write at 32MB/Sec.
So you want to make sure the backups and the NetBackup Media Server are
driving the tapes to write at 32MB/Sec.

You'll need to work closely with your AIX and NetBackup Sysadmin. The DB2
Backup is pretty straight forward, so if there's a performance issue, then
9 out of 10 times it's a NetBackup issue. I'd also work closely with
Symantics on NetBackup parms. With your back dated version of AIX you may
have problems with updating NetBackup Parms... they won't stick.

Good luck.

I have v7.1 (full offline backup) v8.2 ( full online
backup) and they are all single instance without partition.
in v7.1 I have 2 databases in that one single instance all
need to do offline backup.
We are using AIX 5.1 on v7.1 and 5.2 on V8.2.
Now we have 170GB backup dump to disk for (DW) database in
v7.1 and which took too many disk space.
We are trying to change to netbackup and write to tape
directly. I am worry about the restore too, from disk
backup dump I can restore without any issue; but I am not
sure about redirect restore on netbackup?

Re: db2udb with netbackup

Sue,
Are you using DB2 9 or DB2 V8?
What OS and level?
Is this for Online or Offline backup?
Ist this for Single Partition database (non-DPF) or Multiple Partition
database (DPF)?
Are you doing a full Database backup or Tablespace Backup?
What does your backup to disk look like now?

I have worked with DB2 with NetBackup. Is there an issue?
