Re: migrate to 64 bits in AIX machine

Sue,

Unless you have an issue where the size of your memory constructs, like bufferpools or sortheap, are constrained within the 2 GB allowed by 32-bit addressing, there's no reason to switch. Actually, you get a bit less than 2 GB, more like 1.75 pr even 1.5. but in many cases that's enough.

If you switch the instance to 64-bit addressing, then you have so much potential address space that it can be dangerous the other way. Because paging/swapping technology has not caught up with the amount of memory allowed by 64-bit addressing, I sometimes joke that what you really get is 37.5-bit addressing. This is just my way of warning you not to make the sum of your memory constructs exceed the real memory on your server or you'll trade DB2 memory performance issues for OS swapping performance issues.

HI all,
Our DB2UDB V8.2 (FP15) database is running on AIX 5.2 32 bits
and does anyone know if we migrate to 64bits
how good about it?
I only know the db2 will run above the line and what good about it and do
we really need to go to 64 bits?

Thanks in advance !!

Sue
