An IXF format should be platform independent and will contain all indexes and primary keys for the table including the data itself.
I see NO problem with your method as long you extract the data with a simple EXPORT statement (without invoking EXPORT with options specific to only version 8.1. For example: LOBS option will be processed in version 8 differently then in version 7.2 and 5, etc.).
