Greg, you came to the same conclusion I did. I'm currently in the process
of following the same migration plan. I only have one test environment up
in V8 32-bit with V7 clients so I'm not too far down the path. But I do
expect it to work.
Good luck,
Blair

Subject: RE: 32-bit Instance on Itanium
I have an IA64 version of DB2 and I'd like to go directly to 64 bit without
passing go but there are a few problems. You see, I have about 300
databases currently running under version 7 db2. Version 8 DB2 client
doesn't work completely right with version 7 databases. Version 7 client
won't work with a version 8 64 bit database. It will work with a 32-bit
version 8 database however.
So, I was hoping to do a 2 phase migration. First upgrade all my 7 db's to
version 8 32-bit. (And while this process is in progress, all my version 7
clients will still happily work on all the new version 8 32-bit db's and all
the version 7 databases which haven't been migrated yet). Once I've
migrated all the version 7 databases to version 8 (32-bit), then I can
upgrade all the clients to version 8. Then I can turn around and migrate
all the 32-bit databases to 64-bit. Convoluted? Yes. Unfortunately the
best way I can think to do this.
Does anyone have a better idea?

Wise,
You can run IA32 application on IA64 by the help of IA32EL. Because
this IA32 application run as an MRTE application just like Java & .NET ones
so the high performance of Itanium would not be brought out.
I sugggest that you should get an IA64 version of db2 and migrate
your application to this platform, the process will be very easy and
straightforward.

Xihua

Subject: 32-bit Instance on Itanium
I've got an Itanium box running Red Hat Linux here and it doesn't seem
possible to create a 32 bit instance. (Every time I run db2icrt -w 32,
I end up with a 64-bit instance anyway). Anyhow, could anyone confirm
whether or not it is possible to run a 32-bit database instance on
Itanium/Linux?
Thanks,
