instead of having 1 instance per db on one server you can have n schemas on one instance.

DBn Usern
Every objects in a schema are isolated from another one.

I think the following may be helpful.
As has been said, without RAC there is one database per instance. After
installing the Oracle software, you create instances, databases etc
separately. The real point I would like to make is that it's important to
structure and name your directories properly, and the following document
