RE: DBA Role

RE: DBA Role

Oracle is much more friendly and well-behaved (on UNIX, at least, not having
used it on the mainframe), and I'm sure I'm not biased ;-)

My 2 cents-
I would say it partly depends on your inclinations and experience. If
you are coming from a workstation/OO environment, you may be more
comfortable with SQL server. If mainframe, perhaps DB2.

Also, a good question might be if you want to work for a big or small
company or you have a preference as to the type of business. I work in
insurance and most of our big, 'Mission critical' databases are DB2. In
a big company, you would tend to be more specialized

Job security may = boooring; excitement may = unemployment...

On the other hand, I would say to be knowledgeable in multiple systems
makes you more marketable.

I am unfamiliar with Oracle...

Subject: DBA Role

I am currently looking into exploring other career paths within the IT
industry, specifically the DBA role. I am hoping that someone will be
able
to provide some insight into the DBA role, for example, which is the
best
path to go...DB2, Oracle, SQL, etc.? Are there any books you can
recommend? What is life like in the day and life of a DBA? What are the
different avenues available to a DBA? What certifications do employers
look for in a DBA?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Jessica
