The best path you can take is to become a Project Manager. They are paid
20 - 40K per year more than a senior DBA, I never seen one carry a on-call
pager (electric leash), work weekends or work overtime - and - they get ALL
the glory while everyone else does all the work. Plus they're more likely
to move up into management.
The PMI Certification is like gold and you're highly unlikely to be
outsourced since you'll be managing the projects your company needs even
after they've outsourced their IT department.

Trust me on this one Jessica, if you want a six-figure income without
hardly working you'll get into project management

DBA Role
I am currently looking into exploring other career paths within the IT
industry, specifically the DBA role. I am hoping that someone will be able
to provide some insight into the DBA role, for example, which is the best
path to go...DB2, Oracle, SQL, etc.? Are there any books you can
recommend? What is life like in the day and life of a DBA? What are the
different avenues available to a DBA? What certifications do employers
look for in a DBA?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Jessica
