Well said Mark!
I completely agree.

Subject: RE: DBA Role
First and foremost, in my opinion, you need to have a good solid level
of
experience in either application development or system administration.
The
role of a DBA is primarily one of support. The two areas are
administration
and analysis. Sysadmin experience will stand you well in supporting the
physical side of administration. Development experience will help you
understand the logical/design side of your support role. If you are
supporting developers and you have done this type of work yourself, even
if
it isn't in the same language they are using, you have a better
understanding of the kinds of support that they need.
I came to the DBA role through the application development side, with
some
side work in LAN/PC administration, and both types of experience have
helped
me understand the needs of my customers.
If you are new to IT, please take some time to explore one or both sides
of
the types of customers that a DBA is going to support. Anyone can read
a
book and pass a test, but understanding the challenges a developer is
facing
when they call you at 3 AM will make you a much stronger DBA,
As far as the RDBMS you want to manage, it doesn't really matter. Some
pay
more, some pay less, it depends on where you live and industry you work
in.
I have come to find that they are all the same when it comes down to the
nitty-gritty. You want to store some data. You need a table to put it
in.
You need a way for the users to access it. You need to make sure it
remains
available and recoverable. The rest is syntax.
Thanx,
Mark McNary

Subject: DBA Role
I am currently looking into exploring other career paths within the IT
industry, specifically the DBA role. I am hoping that someone will be
able
to provide some insight into the DBA role, for example, which is the
best
path to go...DB2, Oracle, SQL, etc.? Are there any books you can
recommend? What is life like in the day and life of a DBA? What are the
different avenues available to a DBA? What certifications do employers
look for in a DBA?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Jessica
