May I suggest some casual reading on IMS version 8, 9, and 10.
See all the things IMS can NOT do.

I used to use IMS/DB back in the mid-eighties. That was a mildly
unpleasant experience - typical mainframe cryptic commands, and the
database is only fast for those queries that it is specifically designed
for. Need to know anything else and it's both a lot of work and slow.
Meanwhile, I haven't seen a new app go to IMS/DB since probably 1989.
But quite a few moved from IMS/DB to its relational competitors. I'd
consider it a serious dead-end.
