I agree especially with your second point! We get in some trouble here
'doing what we know', not looking for the optimum solution.

Beating a deceased Equine now. Basically, IMS is very good for TP
systems, where the data access is pretty much known at design time.
Relational DBs were designed to allow more Adhoc access, and are
therefore more flexible (although a bad schema design can cripple this).
IMS changes could be murder to implement (Reorg jobs anyone?)
Every application likely has some unique requirements. Any data
storage/access technology (assuming it well implemented) has it's place,
even flat files. Just need to fit the tools to the jobs. Too many
people shoehorn what they are comfortable with into ludicrous
situations. I had a fanatic (who had done some XML work) want to
ignore any DB, and store everything into one multi GB XML file (in
1998). Claimed we could "just read it in at startup, and write it out
at shutdown. Thought we didn't need xactions, logging, ACID, etc, we
could just roll our own. Won that battle.

Oh look, a database complex.
I know the things IMS, ADABAS, DB2, UDB, SQL Server, Sybase and Roscoe
(and
more) can and can't do.
But wait, there's more...
I know what VSAM, GTAM, GSAM and many more can and can't do.
You imply that your current flavor of database is the BEST? You've got
to be kidding!
What database system will you be working on in 5 years? 10 years? 20
years? Will you be a plumber by then? I probably will unless I end up
as a WalMart door greeter. :-)
Reminds me of the old OS wars... who won? The company with the best
product or the company with the most sales?
Get off the soap box Gary!!
Okay? Ok!

May I suggest some casual reading on IMS version 8, 9, and 10. See all
the things IMS can NOT do.

I used to use IMS/DB back in the mid-eighties. That was a mildly
unpleasant experience - typical mainframe cryptic commands, and the
database is only fast for those queries that it is specifically designed
for. Need to know anything else and it's both a lot of work and slow.
Meanwhile, I haven't seen a new app go to IMS/DB since probably 1989.
But quite a few moved from IMS/DB to its relational competitors. I'd
consider it a serious dead-end.
