I'm from a mainframe/DB2 background, and have worked with Unix/Oracle for
the last 3 years. I was a DB2 bigot, and having worked with Oracle, I remain
a DB2 bigot.
My own experience is that Oracle was richer in functionality, but DB2 now
runs on every platform that Oracle does. Oracle on a mainframe would likely
cause heavy network traffic - as all members of that systems programming
department send their resumes out on the potential news. IBM has a rich set
of very functional and useful utilities, including a REORG that offers 24x7
availability, and there are many 3rd party utilities as well. Some of the
DB2 performance tools are eloquent at telling you exactly where database and
application performance problems are.
There are obviously many things to consider, including your platform -
mainframe, Unix, whatever. Every DBA will likely offer a different opinion.
Talk to IBM and Oracle and get references of customers that have a
potentially similar profile to your company. If they want your business, and
I know IBM do, then they'll be more than willing to assist.
If you wish to discuss this further, then feel free to e-mail me directly.

Subject: Oracle vs. DB2
My company is starting a data warehouse initiative. I have been asked to do
a comparisons between Oracle and DB2. I am an Oracle DBA and therefore not
very objective. Does anyone have any information they would like to share
or can you direct me to a site to get some comparative information.
