I've worked through the 159657.1 doc
os is solaris 5.8
I've tried with compatible=8.1.7 | 8.1.7.0.0 | 9.2.0.4 and get the same
ora 0402/0405 combo every time.
_ALLOW_RESETLOGS_CORRUPTION is unset
_SYSTEM_TRIG_ENABLED=FALSE
ORACLE_HOME points at 9.2.0.4 installation
The wierd thing is that the dev database went through this exact same
upgrade process without complaining.
The deprecated param is fast start io target. I commented it out, but the
error persisted.

What OS are you using? What "premil stuff" have you done?
1) Is the COMPATIBLE init parameter still set to 8.1.7?
2) If you have the _ALLOW_RESETLOGS_CORRUPTION parameter set, is it TRUE?
3) If you have the _SYSTEM_TRIG_ENABLED parameter set, is it FALSE?
4) Does your $ORACLE_HOME point to 9.2.0 instead of 8.1.7?

I've got a tar open for this as well, but I'm getting to the stage of having
to abandon this upgrade, so any help appreciated.
Been through all the prelim stuff and get to
startup migrate
... which fails with the following error. Can anyone offer any advice ?
