I have seen a Programmer/DBA before. He was a Programmer first. Then he
became a DBA. He loaded the software (Oracle 8i, version 8.1.6), built the
Oracle database, installed and configured 9IAS, and programmed the
application (using Forms 6i and PL/SQL Server Pages (PSPs), and created
Discoverer 4i reports). Of course, this guy name is Horace "Ed" Edwards
(me). But that was small project! I would never do that again!.

I've seen in the past, programmers "upgrade" to DBA's... but a programmer
can never be a programmer and a DBA at same time.

take good backups and to
selectively restore a portion
of the backups each day
to test those backups.
Ordinary (mortal) programmers can do the rest.
