Re: Purpose of Lazy DBA

Re: Purpose of Lazy DBA

If you look at my earlier post OT - LazyDBA Board Usage, the original
reason behind it is I have seen board usage drop considerably. I have
been a member on LazyDBA for close to three years now, and posting to
the board has dropped significantly. Many of the experts seem to have
already left the board.
I can't be certain why, but there used to be a real friendly banter
associated with this board, and that seems to be gone now. It is really
too bad.
People on this list get really offended when a newbie asks an "easy"
question. If you're new to Oracle and thrown right in to the fire, you
tell me what's easy. My position has always been that it is e-mail, and
if you don't like it, delete it. I've seen brilliant people on this
list answer trivial questions, and if they have the time and don't mind
doing it, why should anybody else care.
Now Henry is the owner of this list, and occasionally he sends out
e-mails saying you shouldn't do someone's job for them, and I agree to a
certain extent. If you're banging around on a test box with all the
time in the world, or just trying to learn Oracle for the heck of it,
read the manuals, take the classes, whatever it takes to get you there.
If you're doing this for a living though, and for whatever reason you
don't know the answer to something, I don't think you should be made to
feel ashamed to post your question. Once again, if you don't like the
question, don't answer it, but don't make the people who don't mind
answering feel like they're doing something wrong.
I'm off my soap box now, and anyone who disagrees may feel free to tell
me what a moron I am.

Hi,

Can I ask a basic question - what is the main purpose of this group?

Is it a place for total beginners to learn how to be a DBA, or is there
some level of self help that is expected of people before they ask a
question?

There seems to be an awful lot of questions that can be answered if
people would bother to spend 5 minutes looking up the information in the
documentation, OTN, or MetaLink.

I know it is called "Lazy DBA", but I think this is taking it too
literally.

If the main purpose is as a training ground for people just starting
out with Oracle, then it does not really offer anything to an
experienced DBA, which is precisely the type of person I would have
expected would have the most to contribute..

What are other people's thoughts on this? Are my expectations too
high?

Paul
