RE: RMAN HELP

RE: RMAN HELP

Check the bottom of the email messages for the link to the Oracle
documentation, search for the RMAN docs from Oracle.

Your questions are answered much more fully in the docs, but here is a
short version.

>Dose the rman need to be on a separate box, or can I just activate the
rman user?

RMAN is a built in feature of Oracle, to use the abilities I believe you
have to grant some permissions and roles that are not automatically
granted - but it has been a while since I installed/activated/started
using RMAN and my memory is rusty.

>Dose the Rman need its own database on the same computer??

Yes, no, and it depends.

RMAN uses a database to keep track of RMAN functions and scripts as well
as backups and other information. But use of the parts of RMAN that use
the database are not required, and the database is not required - the
information can be stored in the control file. If the database is used,
it SHOULD NOT be on the same computer, and definitely not on the same
disk drive or array - hardware failure takes out your database AND THE
RECOVERY INFORMATION. Not good.

A new box is not required if you already have multiple Oracle boxes
running - put box A RMAN backup database on box B, and box B RMAN backup
database on box A.

I admin 6 Oracle DBs from one OEM console on a separte box with all the
RMAN indormation stored on the OEM Console box. Currently I have about
45 Megs of storage space used for the RMAN data.

>Any Rman setup instructions would be great

Follow the link at the bottom of the email and check out the docs from
Oracle.

Another goor resourse is the Oracle 9i RMAN Backup & Recovery book by
Robert G. Freeman - a poster on this list.

Hope this helps, and hope any incorrect information I might have give is
quickly corrected by others on the list.

Subject: RMAN HELP

I have to set up RMAN for some new back up software. I have oracle
9.2.0.4 on windows 2000 server. Dose the rman need to be on a separate
box, or can I just activate the rman user? Dose the Rman need its own
database on the same computer?? Any Rman setup instructions would be
great, I am not a DBA, but I perform most of the functions of our oracle
database.
