Gloria,
have you set up your password file for remote administration? You will be
needing it when trying to "connect your_name/[Email Address Removed] as
sysdba". Another likely reason could be an outdated client (i.e. 8.0.x).
hth,
gerald

One thing I have noticed is that when we log on as user sys(on the server)
not the sqlplus worksheet we do not have that error message.
Here is what happens:
oracle> sqlplus
SQL*Plus: Release 8.1.7.0.0 - Production on Fri Jan 28 09:19:12 2005
(c) Copyright 2000 Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved.
Enter user-name: sys
Enter password:
Connected to:
Oracle8i Enterprise Edition Release 8.1.7.0.0 - 64bit Production
With the Partitioning option
JServer Release 8.1.7.0.0 - 64bit Production
SQL> show user
USER is "SYS"
SQL> connect sys as sysdba
Enter password:
Connected.

This is very likely due to incorrect password for sys.
