RE: 8i to 9i database upgrade

RE: 8i to 9i database upgrade

"Direct upgrade" refers to using the Database Upgrade Assistant, i.e. an
in-place upgrade. If you have the downtime window to upgrade via a full
export and import, you'll be supported as long as the import utility can
read the export file, which is usually quite a few releases (pretty sure
you can use export & import to go from 7.1 to 10.1).

Justin,

Note:159657.1 (metalink)

Upgrade path for Oracle 8i:
If your old release version is 8.1.5 or 8.1.6, then direct upgrade to
Oracle 9.2
is NOT supported. You must first upgrade this version to 8.1.7. After
the
upgrade to 8.1.7 or your version IS 8.1.7, you can directly upgrade your
database to Oracle 9.2. However, if your target release is 9.0.1,
direct upgrade from 8.1.5 and 8.1.6 is supported.

Does this mean that it is the process that is not supporte dor what, and
if
it is the process that is not supported how can they then support
theresult
?

I'm not sure where you read the particular comment about supported
upgrades, but I'm pretty confident that it refers to using the Database
Upgrade Assistant. Going from 8.1.6 to 9.2.0 via export and import is
certainly supported.

Thanks but doesnt really answer my question.

What I am trying to find out is what Oracle will support. Is it the
process
of the full import export that they wont support or is it the system
once
you have upgraded it by a full imp/exp.

I have posted a question to oracle on metalink but they dont seem to be
to
quick to commit them selves to an answer.

Better to create a new oracle 9i database and put the data in.

Can some one please clear something up for me.

When doing a direct upgrade from 8.1.6.3 to 9.2.0.5 and you do a FULL
export and import, what is it that Oracle WONT support ?

On metalink they say that for a supported system you need to go to 8.1.7
or
9.1 first. So do they mean that they will not support the process of you
do
a direct upgrade or do they mean they will not support the updated
database
if you do a direct upgrade.

Thanks

R
