I will not call it a horror but something you would want to watch out, if you don't use RMAN Repository database and rely on controlfile, the scenerio which can create problems is if you want to restore an older file, you may not find rman information about it in controlfile, since it keeps only a limited information depending upon RECORD_KEEP_SIZE thing. So your older backups may become useless.
