You must be using pre 9i RMAN. RMAN simplifies the recovery process so that
it is quicker and easier. If something is wrong with my hot or cold non-rman
backup, I don't have any other option than to use a previous backup. If I
lost a archive log, I have no other option, I cant restore past the missing
archive log. If you have the luxury to use multiple backup options then you
might have multiple restore options. But if you only backup one way, whether
RMAN or something else, you only have one restore option.
If you call oracle with a problem restoring from a hot (non-RMAN) backup,
they will tell you, sorry, not supported. That won't make you look very good
either.

You are right they can be recovered, it takes a LONG!!!! Time but they
can be recovered. My biggest beef with RMAN is if anything goes wrong
there is no other way to recover the database. Also if you call Oracle
about a problem with RMAN it takes days to get them to fix it. I don't
know about the rest of you but I have never had days to recover a
database. If it takes more than a few minutes you have the CIO or a Sr
VP standing behind you tapping his toe.
I guess the best answer I have is that I like products that make me look
good RMAN does not fit that mold. It is all about options, the more
options a DBA has to getting the datbase by up the better off they are.
RMAN limits my options to ONE.

I would disagree on that, the backup information is also stored in
controlfile, so even if you loose your repository you can restore the
database using the current controlfile i did it many times.
In case you loose your controlfile too then its a little bigger problem
you have to run a pl/sql block (described in the RMAN manual) to get
controlfile out of backuppeice and then restore datafiles etc.

Somebody told me once, if you loose the repository, (assuming you are
using one), that all your databases are hostage as there would be no way
to recover any of the databases until first you recovery the repository
database. (Repository database is always backed up using the
controlfile option and not the repository option).
