Actually, you can use RMAN to backup the RMAN Catalog - you just do it in "nocatalog" mode (as suggested below).
You need to ensure that "auto controlfile backup" is enabled, and that your record_keep_time for the RMAN Catalog Database controlfile is sufficiently large (for example, 90 days) to keep enough MetaData for recovery purposes.
This is all documented in the RMAN User Reference.

Somebody told me once, if you loose the repository, (assuming you are
using one), that all your databases are hostage as there would be no way
to recover any of the databases until first you recovery the repository
database. (Repository database is always backed up using the
controlfile option and not the repository option).
