Cost means nothing as a number. Cost is a relative rating for the query
you happen to be reviewing. At least as far as explain plans go. For
example one query could cost 200 and another 300 and the 300 query could
actually run faster.

hmmmm.... just signed on to this site - i am in the process of tuning a
query. the cost of the SQL statement is 24. does anyone have a rule of
thumb for that they consider a poor performing statement in regards to
cost?
thanks!

Yeah and for a quick and dirty SQLPLUS query that can be spooled and
edited for which rows are returned:
select 'alter system kill session '||''''||sid||','||serial#||';' from
v$session;
