It's probably doing a large amount of rollback, as stated before... if you
can't spent so much time waiting for the instance to shutdown, log on as
sysdba, issue 'shutdown abort', then issue 'startup'... Then, rollback
will be done on an 'as needed' basis... However, you your intention is
doing a cold backup you will have to wait till all dead transaction are
rolled back...
