Backup software is capable of doing this (for eg BMC petrol if installed)

Having taken over a database i noticed this in the alert log:
alter tablespace SYSTEM begin backup

Its a 8.1.7.3 database running on Solaris 8. This is'nt a cron job, so im
wondering where its run from.
Its not needed since i setup RMAN to take backup of the database.
Can it be related to this?
