RE: Is it possible to check database status from a remote host?

I can try connecting to database and check if it fails. But honestly, I
do not like this idea... but I am afraid there may not be other
options.

Log in select 'DATABASE UP' from dual;

From unix then, grep for DATABASE UP in your spool file.

This tests DB and listener -- after all if either is down, users are
jumpy.

(or windows --- (user OEM))

Is it possible to check database status from a remote host? I thought
of
tnsping as an option but it would return me "success" if listener is
up
but database is down.

Any ideas?
