Re: Backup strategy....

Re: Backup strategy....

Hi Yves,

I deploy the RMAN solution at customer sites for all major accounts.

The one 4TB solution was RMAN hot backups.
One full backup to tape a month - which usually ran for 30 hours (Architectural constraints) with DB up and available.
Incremental backups are scheduled twice a week for changing data as well as newly added datafiles (also to tape).
Archives are also sent to tape via RMAN on a regular interval.
It appears that todays Warehouses are partly OLTP / DataMart , a new trend in the industry.

If money is not an object:
You can spice up all the above with a split Disk Copy of the most recent full backup, that way in the event of recovery, you can retreive from disk. This disk copy can also be split to the
mirror for further redundancy.

You will be surprised how many TBSPIT (TableSpace Point-in-Time) recoveries have been requested in a Warehouse. Prepare for this, using a Crash and Burn Server dedicated to restoring P.I.T
tablespaces, as the method to do this is to use an Auxillary database, preferably aside from Production.

Happy implementing.
