On windows system, there is a huge difference of time between running CATALOG from 'DOS' Sqlplus and running from 'JAVA' SQLPLUS or SQLPLUS Worksheet. So always run from DOS on WIndows. The difference is greater than a factor 20 (My experience: 10' in DOS, 4H in JAVA).
You could stopped the JAVA task without problem and run it in DOS.
