Have just started a similar move. The main drivers are:
- New hardware platform (higher OS version) so as we are migrating, we
should upgrade as part of the move
- Significant improvements in performance and handling of XML
- RAC improvements (notably FAN)
- OEM (for management)
- RMAN improvements
Basic advice: don't cut the testing. Don't believe Oracle when they say its
"upwardly compatible" as something will always go wrong. Assume everything
will fail and test absolutely everything against the new version in advance
and fix/retest as much as you can. Get the users to test and sign off that
it all works as they want. Make sure you have a working plan to move forward
in a controlled way AND a way to go back if you need to (i.e. it goes
horribly wrong after you go live) and you can save your data.
