If this is an OLTP system, chances are you are not going to improve
performance with partitioning, and can indeed hurt overall performance.
Since performance is your goal there is no need to go into when or why
you would partition -- I would start you on chapter 13 or 14 of Thomas
Kytes book anyway 'expert oracle database architecture'.
How small? If you are using Standard edition, you cannot partition
anyway.
Your best bet for the immediate future is to post the query as Anthony
suggested.
