Programmers used to just care about their piece of the pie, code their section, without understanding how their module affects others.
A developer has to have a bigger picture in mind as to how their program is going to fit into the development project as a whole.
Maybe "they" call people developers now because the expectation is that they will take other things into account besides what they are responsible for.

Subject: Developers and Programmers
To All,
Oh my! Phew! I can't believe it! While on break from our training, I just had a new, young "developer"(Oh my! Phew!) asked me: "Ed, why did they call us programmers and now why do they call us developers"? For the first time in many decades, I was speechless! I just didn't know what to say to this new, young "developer"(Oh my! Phew!) without breaking his spirit. hehe.
My question is (and I asking all of you): What should have been my reply?
I thank you for your support! hehe.
