You could have asked him why they call you a DBA... Don't Bother Asking...

Now that's what I'm talking about! hehe.

Now, now Chris!
It is just a matter of being "for real"! As my young, junior DBA says "It's all good"! hehe.

Well said Brian. I've also been in the IT business forever. 27 years now.
All this chatter about who's ego is biggest is simple foolishness.

In all seriousness, as a former programmer/developer and DBA with over 24
years in this industry, I realized that there has been a constant shifting
of roles and responsibilities within the IS/IT positions over the years.
This has been a direct result of the changing technologies being introduced
into the market place. It seems that every five to seven years there has
been a shift in the definition of job descriptions and the tasks each has
been responsible for.

OLD
1) computer operator (I,II,III)
2) computer programmer (I) [usually entry level]
3) programmer analyst (I, II, III - sometimes IV)
4) systems analyst (I, II, III)

As client server architectures were introduced and relational databases were
being introduced;

1) Unix/Windows "OS" administrator (former computer operator)
2) Network administrator (former computer operator) [sometimes consolidated
with OS admin]
3) Programmer Analyst
4) Systems Analyst
5) DBA

Current
1) Infrastructure technician/engineer (network engineers & admins , OS
admins)
2) Developers
3) Business Analysts
4) Architects
5) DBA
6) Project Managers

The one constant in the last 15 to 20 years has been the DBA role. The
overall roles and responsibilities have not changed a great deal. In some
smaller companies, a person may wear several hats;

Developer/DBA
OS admin/DBA
Architect/DBA

All depends on the company.

Back in the day when a computer was the size of a small house, a
programmer was a person who "programmed" in the native language for that
particular computer. Hence the title programmer.

Now-a-days, we "develop" code that is higher-level (almost English
like), and it is usually platform and OS independent. We no longer
program for a specific computer...we develop a program that can work
with any system (as long as there is a compiler available on that system
that can convert the code to an executable for that system).

That's just my perspective.
John

To All,
Oh my! Phew! I can't believe it! While on break from our training,
I just had a new, young "developer"(Oh my! Phew!) asked me: "Ed, why
did they call us programmers and now why do they call us developers"?
For the first time in many decades, I was speechless! I just didn't
know what to say to this new, young "developer"(Oh my! Phew!) without
breaking his spirit. hehe.

My question is (and I asking all of you): What should have been my
reply?

I thank you for your support! hehe.
