You can also read up about Data_pump which is new to 10 g. Other way is
to do a dbca and create template with data and structure.

Subject: Export and Import
Hi all,
Need some input here please. Am newly hired here whose opinion is a
total nonsense to the existing staff, you know, new kid on the block,
what do I know.
Anyway, we have databases here that are 200GB and more, one is on
10gRelease1 and one is on 10gRelease2. According to them, there are
issues with 10gRelease1 so it is suggested an upgrade to 10gRelease2
will make it better. That is why I have the same database on different
release versions. 10gRelease1 is current and 10gRelease2 is under
observation to verify whether it is really more stable to move to.
I do not have any argument on which release is more stable. At the
moment, we are doing export and import of the database, all 200GB and
more, excluding the system defined one I hope, to get the most recent
data from Release1 to Release2. Maybe this is done every week, every
month, I don't know. They said this is how we must do it. As I've
mentioned, am newly hired, I do not know the system personally or what
its schema look like or what its database look like but I knew Oracle,
SQLServer and stuff. Now, my question is:
1. Can't I just do an export and import of tablespaces instead of
tables?
2. How about cloning? Isn't it possible to get around this via cloning
instead and then just run database upgrade assistant? That is, forget
that I have 10gRelease2. I'll just re-install a copy of 10gRelease1 on
the same box but using a different ORACLE HOME, then clone the database
that is currently on 10gRelease1, then run database upgrade assistant?
In theory, isn't this what am supposed to do anyway, my current database
is 10gRelease1 and I will be moving to 10gRelease2?
Wouldn't either options above be quicker than having to do the estimated
4 or 5, or even more hours, of export and import? Most of these
databases are SAP and PeopleSoft. Is there something special about the
these products that we have to do export and import of tables instead of
tablespaces. Anyway, any feedback will be very much appreciated. If I
have a SQLServer and DB2 databases on different versions instead of
Oracle, how should I be doing this? With SQLServer, I presume, I just do
backup and restore and I should I be alright. But how about DB2?
Anyway, please post your feedback. Thanks in advance.
