What happens if you do this, but it doesn't work because it is looking for a path that is no longer there. Creating the path again doesn't work.

Use crosscheck command like this:
RMAN> crosscheck backup;
This will check the status of your backups, some of them will probably be EXPIRED, these are the backups that can't be deleted because they are not there.
If this is the case, then you'll have to do:
RMAN> delete expired backup;
And then resume what you were doing...
