When my database does not come down, it probably means that a
transaction is rolling back. I normally do
Shutdown abort
Startup
Shutdown immediate
Good luck

Subject: Database not shutting down
Hi Experts,
I am trying to shutdown my database. I typed shutdown immediate at the
sql prompt. It is more than 30 minutes, it has not shut down as yet.
What should I do. Shutdown abort?
This is a Unix platform, Oracle 9i, standard edition.
Please help.
Tony
