Does anyone have any experience with this error?

ORA-03115: unsupported network datatype or representation

Oracle says this is the cause:
A user bind or define, or an Oracle function, is not supported by this
heterogeneous Net8 connection.

And that this is the solution:
Upgrade the older version of Oracle and try again.

We do have a 10g database but 8.1.7 Oracle client on each of the
affected PCs. So, logically I would think that Oracle's solution would
be correct. However, this error only happens sporadically, and is
un-reproducable in our development and test environments. BTW, all of
our development and test PCs also have the 8.1.7 Oracle client installed
and are going against 10g DB.

We are going to take one of the affected PCs and upgrade the client
there to see if this resolves the problem, but we're just a bit confused
about the sporadic nature of this error and the fact that we cannot
recreate it in a controlled environment.

Any and all suggestions and/or information are welcomed.
