RE: Developer to DBA

RE: Developer to DBA

You can do a portion of a DBAs role as a developer. Start to migrate
your development style towards those with much more database-intensive
design, if possible. Data warehousing and mining, DTS packages,
different jobs, are all things you can get started in. The specific
database software, operating system, and networking knowledge could be
learned in a short training class.

Install the database that you want to learn on your home machine. Learn
how to do the backups and scripting to automate your tasks. Learn all
the optimization techniques possible.

I got lucky as I was a developer who had done lots of heavy database
work in the past. I was then hired to run about half of the intranet at
one location for a large corporation. I am now a web server admin, DBA
and the developer for about 20 intranet applications that live on my
database and web server. Pushing the envelope as a developer into the
DBA realm will open opportunities in DBA work later on.

Good luck.

I personally feel that the very best DBAs were once developers. In my
shop, the developers are our customers, and having come up in IT as a
developer, I completely understand all of the challenges and
frustrations they can face on a daily basis. Many times, changes that
the DBAs make in the database can adversely affect the development team,
and many DBAs I have worked with in the past don't have much sympathy
when this happens. They're too busy trying to cover their back-sides if
something they have touched has caused unforeseen harm to the system.
My advice is to stick with it, learn as much as you can about database
administration, but don't forget your roots.

Good Luck!!

Oh my! Phew! Ouch! Can a "developer"(Oh my! Phew!) become a DBA? Hehe.
Well, you are on the right track! Hehe. Welcome to our world! Hehe.
If you know SQL and PL/SQL, you have a start. Now, learn to install the
Oracle software, create and drop databases, and practice doing backups
and restores using RMAN and your own scripts. Visit the oracle website.
If you can afford it, take some oracle DBA courses! Also, purchasing a
few good books will also help! There, you go! Get busy! Go for it!
Hehe.

Have a great Day!
