Windows Server 2003 ... Oracle 9i while in sqlplus and issueing shutdown
abort I get insufficient privileges ... sorry for my ignorance ... but what
is the generic user/passwords as I haven't set them up yet.

You didn't mention what operating system this is on or what version of
Oracle. I would suggest trying to stop the service. This would be true
on unix or Windows. You might try in a command line interface set or
export ORACLE_SID=<sid_name>
then sqlplus (or srvmgrl if 8.1.7 or older) then shutdown abort. Is
this a single instance or multiple instances (rac or dataguard)?

Need a bit more info.
