RE: Client and Server on different platform

RE: Client and Server on different platform

Allen,

The client is normally "downward compatible" in that it will access lower
version databases without issue. There are sometimes issues accessing higher
versioned databases (example: 8i client vs 10g database has SQLPLUS issues).
You may need to fiddle with the ODBC/JDBC drivers for compatibility (in
particular), but these can be downloaded from Oracle (or elsewhere) as
required.

For your windows client, install the highest version you can get hold of.
This should at least match the version of your database, if possible.

John.

Thank you, Andre,Terance & Rick.
I get the feeling I have wrongly worded my problem, But got some
pointers on issues I never knew existed!!!

Let me rephrase my question which I originally had in mind:

I have Oracle 10G Database running on Linux ( Suse 10 to be precise ).
I want to install a client on Windows ( Windows XP to be precise ) .

Which client do I need to install on windows , I suppose client that
installs on a Windows environment ( silly me )....
But I was wondering whether accessing an oracle server on Linux
environment will have any problems.
Any suggestions or views gladly accepted.

Regards,
Wolverine

I have 10.2.0.2, 9.2.0.8, and one 8.1.4.7 databases. I connect with
either my 10.2.0.1 client or my 9.2.0 client. Usually I use my 10.2.0.1
client. No problems.

Have a great computing day,
