RE: Dba metrics

RE: Dba metrics

Ask yourself what he wants them for. 1) to see how you are doing your job,
2) to see if your work load is increasing or decreasing, 3) to see if the
databases/machines will need to be upgraded/replaced. I would think some
basic metrics would include:

Machine / DB metrics:
Machine uptime, DB uptime, Average Load (work hours and off hours), Peak
load.
Load would be based on CPU, memory, network and disk usage.
Disk space usage (growth).
Backup performance (how long does it take - is the length of time
increasing)

Sar can collect this stuff easily enough. You can then parse it easily
enough to break out work hours from off hours.

DBA tasks:
# requests for service / # of problems encountered
Amount of time to service each
Cause / resolution of each
Actions taken to ensure they did not re-occur.

You could automate your notes into a table or somesuch to provide this.

Hi Brian,

You can send a report containing information like cpu usage, no of active
sessions, disk usage, vmstat and tablespace usage , patches applied, any
logs cleared etc.,

Dba metrics

Our boss just asked us for "metrics" on our work. Has anybody else ever
been asked this and if so share what they report on as to what is
considered measurable for a DBA? I guess it would be on a day-to-day
basis.....

ciao,

Brian
