I definitely agree with Stephen on this. Today I attended a demo of
Windows Longhorn Server Core ... the UI was simple -- a command prompt,
so even Microsoft are targeting remotely managed, command line driven
operating systems. Oddly one of our UN*X admins asked the bizarre
question ... so how do we install drivers with no GUI? So even an
experienced guy has trouble disconnecting the O/S of windows from the
GUI.
Any posix compliant O/S such as Linux, Solaris, BSD and MacOS etc are
worth spending the effort to learn. Grab some of the CDs/Text books from
O'Reilly. Incidentally, in the Posix world, GUI's are really your own
preference as to which you prefer. They are NOT part of the O/S and
never will be. Consider a GUI as an application you choose to run on top
that simply helps you do stuff!! KDE and Gnome are just applications or
suites of applications.
