Nope. The Oracle installer is simply an X client application. No real
experience or knowlege of X Windows is needed to run and use it. You
really only need to make sure that the DISPLAY env var is set. That's
about the extent of X Windows knowlege needed to run X Client apps.
There's using X applicaations, and then there's knowing X. X is vast,
complicated, flexible, and simply amazing. Using X apps is easy and
requires almost no real knowlege of X.
Configuring the X server, xdm, X client attributes, Window Manager
attributes, or which Window Manager to even run requires some detailed
knowlege of X.
X is more-or-less made up of three components:
1) The X Server
This controls I/O, the video, etc.
2) The Window Manager
This controls the look and feel of the X client applications, scroll
bars, resizing, moving, pull down menus, etc.
3) The X client application
Examples of this would be X terminals, the Oracle installer GUI,
Netscape Browser, etc.
It's interesting to note that you can used whatever Window Manager you
want. Here are some examples:
1) CDE
2) Motif
3) FVWM
4) twm
There are many more. The X Server and Window manager processes run
separate from each other. You can actually start up X and the Windows
Manager. You can bring up X clients. Then you can kill the Window
Manager. The client apps will stay up, but the scroll bars and frames
and controls of the X client (or window) will disappear. You can still
use the client app, but you can't move them, resize them, minimize them,
etc.
Like I said. The X system is amazing and designed correctly from the
outset. It's one of the most brilliant pieces of software ever created!
Back in the day, we used X10. You had to download the source package
from MIT, configure the Makefile, compile it, fix it if the compile
failed, then install and use it. I remember when it transitioned from
X10 to X11. A major improvement! I'm glad to see all of the major OS's
supplying it out of the box!

Hi,
Isn't it then important to learn X windows? The Oracle installer needs
it, so to be a good DBA, you need to use it. Right?
