But surely the whole idea of a standby is that it is a copy of the primary
database. If you modify any data then it wouldn't be a standby.

You can open in read only mode to query, but I don't think you can open in
read/write. It would defeat the object.

Hello,

Can some one provide any hints on opening a standby database in READ-WRITE
mode ?

It tell me that it can be only opened with READ ONLY mode as it has used
standby database.
