If you can connect "... as sysdba"
then you don't need the SYS password,
and you can then set it to something you know.
To my knowledge, in 9i and later you cannot directly
login as SYS.

Hello Gurus,
I've setup an Oracle 10gR2 database on my solaris 10 box and I can't
seem to remember what I set the sys password to..Does anyone know of a
way I can retrieve that password?
