Unless this is a system tablespace, you should not have to shut down the
database.

The datafile being offline should be good enough, I would normally put
the entire tablespace offline... but neither here nor there.

Rename the datafile first on the OS level. Then do step 3 below, then
bring it back online.

You should consider creating a new backup controlfile.

2. startup mount
3. alter database rename file 'old file nanme' to 'new file name';
4. alter database open;
