As in all cases, it depends.
In our case we still follow the OFA to some extent.
Our SAN is broken down into "quick small disks" and "slloooww big disks".
So we can assign different filesystems to different disk groups (archived
data etc on the slow disks, current data on the quick disks).
Works well for us.
