If you are using the 'standard' userid/password authentication Oracle
stores user id's and their passwords in a system catalog table, not
normally visible to the DBA. To the best of my knowledge, passwords are
stored in an encrypted format.
There are other user authentication models available in Oracle. Last I
checked you could user Kerberus to authenticate. However, you need to
user fully qualified user names to do this. i.e. user.company.country

How does a database user get authenticated
I know that there is a table dba_users that lists all the users but does
the database use that table or does the database use a file like the
password file?
