Dear Lazy DBA colleagues - feel free to answer some or all of my following queries concerning the subject
I have inherited a 10g installation which was installed by someone else. I am more accustomed to 9i, and therefore have the following questions. I have searched the Oracle documentation for the definitive answer, but cannot find it.
1. In 9i the HTTP server was installed by default, and configured automatically by the default install. ¿Am I right in thinking that this does not happen in 10g?, and that the HTTP server ¿must be installed separately to the Oracle main database software install? Or ¿is the situation I have inherited - wherein the Oracle software is installed, but the HTTP server is not installed - slightly unusual?
2. I note that the default action of the Database Configuration Assistant is to attempt to create a repository for OEM, and set up the GRID control repository on port 1159. This is despite the fact that the HTTP server has not been created yet. ¿Presumably the idea would be to create the HTTP server first?, before even installing Oracle. This is not stated anywhere in the documentation, new features docs or anything.
3. I am quite surprised that the change in default HTTP server creation in 9i, and separate creation in 10g - being such a large difference between versions - does not merit a mention in new features documentation or anything like that. It is left for the installer-person to deduce this fact. ¿Can anyone point to the definitive document on this issue, that does not rely on making an inference?
4. The documentation - and the printing on the DVDs themselves - seem to use the terms Oracle Enterprise Manager and Grid Control somewhat interchangeably. This has confused me somewhat. Can anyone shed any light on this. From what I can see, Grid control is the mechanism by which OEM 10g controls the databases in the environment.
5. ¿Could it be that HTTP server does get installed by default, but that the implementation I have inherited is somehow flawed?
6. ¿Have I missed something? If yes ¿Please put me right?
7. Yes, I know I could find the answers to all this by making a clean install, but internal policy prevents this recourse at the moment.
Thanks for your attention
Paul
