Then it sounds as though neither compiler is installed. I'm not
positive about AIX 6, but unless IBM has made some drastic changes, the
basic OS installation doesn't come with it. You need to purchase the
C/C++ compilers separately. But it will come with the GNU compiler GCC,
which has always worked for Oracle installations.
See my earlier post about the "no cost" info. :-)

Sorry - I meant the C compiler, not the C++ compiler - C++ is only
required for PL/SQL native compilation & Pro*C/C++ OCI.
The /usr/vac & /usr/vacpp directories do not exist. And, the command
"lslpp -l |grep vac" returned nothing.
I believe that the C compiler must be installed - I seem to recall that
Oracle does some compiling (i.e. make) and linking during install,
correct?
What about a C compiler for AIX 6 at no cost?

On systems with the compiler installed, you would find the compiler in
/usr/vac/bin (XL C for AIX compiler) or /usr/vacpp/bin (XL C/C++ for AIX
compiler).
Running lslpp -l| grep vac should let you know if your C compiler (or
C++ as the case may be) is installed.
And I believe Brian is correct. You shouldn't require a C++ compiler
for a straight install of 10gR2.
Cheers,
Jeff

We had the same problem with HPUX for installing oracle. That compiler
does not come standard with the OS. You get a C compiler but not C++.
We had to buy it. You could continue your install without it
though......
I was told that it was only if your application needs the compiler will
it become an issue.

Subject: AIX 6 C++ Compiler?
Hello all
We have a new AIX 6 host and I was asked to install Oracle 10gR2 on it.
But our System Administrator is having difficulty locating the C++
Compiler for AIX 6.
As far as I'm aware, the compiler is required - not just the runtime
libraries, correct?
Does anyone know where we can get a C++ Compiler that works on AIX 6 and
will suffice for Oracle install at no cost? It will take too long to go
through the red tape to purchase the Native IBM C++ compiler.
I've done a little searching myself and see that gcc is supposed to work
also but there appears to be a problem with gcc on AIX 6 - not
supported?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Regards
Terry Moutray
