I think think the reason is you are not committing as you do your export. Can you include the parameter commit=y this will allow it to write data as you import and your memory will not be used up.

Subject: imp using all available memory
I just realized that when I do an imp on my system it uses all the
available memory. The export dump file is about 42GB's and the available
memory is 18GB's and goes down to about 50MB's during the import. About
5 minutes after the import finishes it gives the memory back. Any ideas
why it uses all my memory?
