Usually a result of some error or bug in the program. I suggest using a
script to proactively monitor for core files by using the find command to
check your core dump destination. I just got one yesterday on a box that
looks like was a result of a bug. No other errors appeared so I am glad I
have monitoring in place. When you find a core file put the name of it in a
temp file that you can check each time the script finds another core file.
That will keep you from getting notified over and over for the same core
file. I usually check for these every hour on a production system and less
frequently on non-production boxes.
