As discussed here is the brief description of the problem faced by SFS project regarding the display/printing of the Japanese Characters.

About the Application
The SFS application is browser based application with Java and Oracle at the server end. Geographically the server (Sun Solaris) is located in Singapore while application users will be from Japan using Japanese Windows and browser. Application generates some hand-offs (flat files for data transfer to other systems) and reports on Unix server as files. These files are then downloaded by users (in Japan) for subsequent processing. The reports and hand-off files are predominantly in English but some fields (e.g. Customer Address) are in Japanese.

Problems faced
1.. The RTF files of the oracle reports generated do not show the Japanese text properly on Japanese system. However, same advices are displayed correctly on English NT after loading appropriate Japanese fonts.
2.. Certain Japanese characters of the hand-off files are ignored thus offsetting the the flat file format. When this file is opened in standard viewers the Japanese characters are not displayed properly.
Other related detail here is that the Language parameter is set to JA16JIS for browser and UTF8 for Oracle.
